Labour NEC Disabled Members Representative
Nomination Statement
I am Emily Pomroy-Smith and I am standing for election as Labour’s Disabled Members Representative on the National Executive Committee.
I am standing because too many disabled members are still shut out of power. We are underrepresented at every level of government and too often marginalised within our own party structures. This is not accidental. Barriers are built into how we organise, how we meet, how decisions are made, and who is assumed to belong in the room.
When I became disabled, I learned very quickly that access is not just about ramps or technology. It is about expectations. It is about whether people believe you are capable, credible, and worth listening to. Too often, disabled members are treated as an afterthought, consulted late, or expected to adapt to systems that were never designed with us in mind.
Accessibility must be at the heart of our party’s democracy. When we design participation around disabled members, we create a Labour Party that works better for everyone. Members with caring responsibilities, members in rural and non city CLPs, and those balancing work, family and activism all benefit when access is taken seriously. Widening participation strengthens engagement, deepens democracy, and brings new voices into our movement.
As a disabled woman, a parent and a carer, I understand how structural barriers limit participation at every level. As a CLP Chair and former Disability Officer, I have worked to break those barriers down through accessible and hybrid meetings, flexibility, better use of technology, and clear communication. Safeguarding is inseparable from this work. Disabled members must be able to participate safely, with confidence that concerns will be heard, taken seriously, and addressed properly. Access without safety is not real inclusion.
If elected, I will build on the excellent work of Ellen Morrison, ensuring continuity while pushing further to embed disability access across the NEC’s work. I will represent disabled members across our entire movement, of every shade of red, working cooperatively and in good faith to ensure disability equality is not siloed, sidelined, or treated as optional.
Accountability will be central to my approach. I will report back regularly and accessibly to disabled members and to affiliated trade union disability groups, ensuring clear communication and meaningful opportunities for engagement.
I have held a wide range of roles within Labour and the wider movement, including CLP Chair, Disability Officer and parliamentary candidate. I am Vice Chair of the Bath and West Co-operative Party, a member of Unite, a member of the Unite South West Disabled Members Committee, and a member of the Disability Labour National Executive Committee. These roles have shaped my belief in solidarity, shared power, and collective responsibility, and in the importance of working constructively across our movement to secure lasting change for disabled members.
Labour is strongest when disabled members are visible, valued, and involved in shaping our future. As NEC Disabled Members Representative, I will work to break down barriers, widen participation, strengthen safeguarding, and ensure disabled members are central to our party’s democracy.
I would be honoured to have your nomination.
